Oracle and Sun: What does the IT industry think?

“The demise of Sun has been caused by the ‘next phase of computing’ which Ingres sees as the emergence of open source and open standards in the New Economics of IT. Oracle may believe that by locking in the customer at the hardware, OS and application level that it can hold-back the inevitable, but history says otherwise.”
There may well be a mix of views between analysts and IT professionals as to whether this is a positive move, but it seems that Oracle’s acquisition of Sun will definitely be something interesting to watch in the coming months.
