Dealing with increasing threats on the cheap
By Asavin Wattanajantra,
Businesses are going to have to have to deal with an increasing number of threats with decreasing security budgets, as the recession continues to take hold.
A report released ahead of Infosecurity 2009 said that 63 per cent of the members of the Information Security Forum (ISF) were expecting to face reduced budgets this year.
This was despite the fact that the world financial situation was changing and "accelerating" the number of new threats to information security.
The ISF said major sources of concern included organised cybercrime, espionage, fraud, and risk to intellectual property, as well as the sabotage or theft of information by angry employees.
“Right now, both the internal and external threats are higher with increasing staff turnover and dissatisfaction coupled with a trend to more organised profit-driven crime,” said Jason Creasey, head of research at the ISF in a statement.
The report warned that reducing information security budgets and the loss of experienced staff would take longer to recover from than the recession.
