T-Mobile has officially unveiled Cupcake 1.5, the latest update for its Google Android-based G1 smartphone.

And UK users will get a taste of the new software before their US counterparts who will have to wait until next week to get their hands on the update.

Features of the update to the G1 - which sold 100,000 units in its first six months on sale in the UK - include a user interface ‘polish’, performance enhancements to the camera, GPS and browser-based page scrolling and an on-screen keypad among others.

Users don’t have to do anything to benefit from the new features as the update will be pushed to their G1 devices over the air automatically.

US users – who clearly have a massive appetite for G1 handsets

– seem to be feeling a little hard done by for getting the update a week later than UK G1 users, but T-Mobile has done its best to allay their concerns.

“Based on feedback from these Forums and independent software developers, T-Mobile USA became aware of concerns with application compatibility. Therefore, additional time was allowed to give developers a chance to update their applications,” states T-Mobile in the FAQ section of a forum post questioning the reason for the US roll-out’s delay.
