Tandberg unveils Virtual Tape Library series
By Jennifer Scott,
The “next generation” of Virtual Tape Libraries (VTL) is being launched today by Tandberg Data.
The Tandberg DPS1000 Series is scalable data protection storage designed with small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) in mind. One unit is able to connect to up to 100 systems such as workstations, servers and virtual systems.
James Jackson, programme manager at Tandberg told IT PRO: “Insurance for your data is often left out in efforts to cut costs but it is more important than ever. 93 per cent of businesses who have data losses go out of business within a year.”
He added: “We have previously provided pieces of the solution, now we want to provide a complete solution.”
Two systems are being released: the 1100 and 1200. The entry level 1100 model is shareable for up to 32 servers using the management console, whereas the 1200 doubles this to 64. The management console also enables users to track data giving them an audit trail as well as only giving certain people access to sensitive data such as patient records or bank details.
It has been designed to allow those with a basic understanding of IT to plug it in and go. It can also scale up as as a company grows with the capability of adding up to 45TBs of extra storage in stages.
Jackson confirmed that the company was working on a scheme for de-duplication to be added to the system in the summer.
Gary Preston, director of North and South Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at Tandberg, said: “With our ability to integrate further down the road and our scalability it gives our product a long horizon. With data legislation becoming more prevalent and the VTL market increasing over the last year, we feel confident in this growing sector of the industry.”
The 1100 model has a suggested retail price of $9,995 and the 1200 comes in at $17,995. Tandberg is taking orders from today and the systems will be generally available from 15 June.
