Adobe joins Microsoft and Apple in patching party
By Asavin Wattanajantra,
Adobe joined Apple and Microsoft in releasing patches this week, securing a vulnerability in two of its popular products.
Two security updates are available for both Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat on Windows and Mac, fixing a vulnerability which could have caused an application to crash and allow an attacker to take control of an infected system.
Adobe recommended that users of Adobe 9.1 and Acrobat 9.1 and earlier versions update to Adobe Reader 9.1.1 and Acrobat 9.1.1.
There was also a second vulnerability, but this only affected Adobe Reader for UNIX.
Rik Ferguson, solutions architect at Trend Micro, said that Adobe were working hard for a fix with complicated coding involved, but that the real problem was the Flash files Adobe Reader was opening.
He said: “I think the problem for them is its not just about fixing the Reader but recreating Flash ads as well."
“Even if you patch the Reader you have to make sure the ads themselves are recompiled, as they themselves are what are vulnerable,” he added.
This isn't the first problem that Adobe has had with PDF files this year.
