Airports sign up for next-generation networks
By Asavin Wattanajantra,
Four airports have signed on for faster networks from Cable & Wireless.
The group operating Manchester, East Midlands, Bournemouth and Humberside airports has agreed a three-year contract with Cable & Wireless to supply them with a Multi-Protocol Switching (MPLS) network.
Cable & Wireless claimed that the ‘next-generation network’ for Manchester Airport’s Group will assist services like corporate email and internet access, as well as mission-critical tasks such as baggage handling and operations of the control tower.
The network should also help in supplying notice board information as well as helping with passenger check-in details and online ticketing.
Director of Group technology and Innovation at Manchester Airports Group Martin Smith claimed that they were trying to constantly innovate and improve to create a "21st century airport".
"As we develop the physical infrastructure of our facilities, it is important that we include a communication network that delivers what we need now in terms of reliability and operational effectiveness,” he said in a statement.
