BT brings Wi-Fi to cash machines

Cash machines in bars sometimes annoy you by making you pay a fee, but one firm looks to provide a useful Wi-Fi service with them.

By Asavin Wattanajantra, 22 Jun 2009 at 14:32

BT will turn cash machines into Wi-Fi hotspots, in a five-year deal with ATM provider Cashbox.

The BT Openzone wireless broadband service will initially be available in 10 locations, including Tiger Tiger sites in London, Manchester and Glasgow.

However Cashbox is looking to expand its connectivity to more of its 2,500 ATM sites. BT broadband customers with inclusive Wi-Fi minutes as well as O2 iPhone users will be able to use the service.

Cashbox chief executive Ciaran Morton said in a statement that in the current climate, people were preferring to withdraw cash rather than using their cards, and therefore the ATM provider was looking to make its cash machines more useful.
