    Diskeeper 2009 Server/Administrator review

As servers and PCs get more powerful and their storage capacity grows exponentially is there really any need for defrag tools anymore? Diskeeper thinks so.

Tidy minded users ensure that their hard disks are kept in tip top condition by regularly defragmenting them and although Windows does have a utility for this, it’s undeniably basic. Vista and Server 2008 have a slightly updated version that provides a scheduler but even this is well short on features. If you want more, then Diskeeper has a lot to offer, as it has maintained its podium position as the professional disk defragmenter of choice.

In this review we take a look at the Server and Administrator versions of Diskeeper 2009 to see what they can offer business environments. Diskeeper Administrator doesn’t provide any defrag tools itself and is designed purely for remotely managing all installations of Diskeeper and looking after defrag schedules on multiple systems.

Diskeeper Administrator requires a SQL database to store client data and they can use an existing one or the bundled MSDE, which can be loaded during installation. It comprises two main components with a Windows service looking after schedules, logging, reporting and alerting information and a console that provides management access. Usefully, Administrator can be managed remotely using more than one console and supports multiple database instances as well.

The main Diskeeper Administrator console is a cheerful affair that provides easy access to all management features. The Getting Started page offers quick links to all main tasks and from here you can scan the network and gather your client systems into groups for easier management. You can select individuals systems or groups and deploy the various Diskeeper products to them using the PushInstall feature.

Deployment is straightforward as you select which Diskeeper products you want to install, point Administrator to the location for the software packages, and either run an immediate push or schedule the task for later. During this process you view the network tree and pick the groups and individual systems that are to receive the software.

All defrag tasks can be fully automated using policies and as long as your client systems have Diskeeper 2007 or 2009 loaded you can streamline this even further with the automatic defrag policy option. For legacy versions up to and including Diskeeper 10 you’ll have to create specific policies for primary and secondary defrag actions.

Policies automatically run defrag jobs on all available volumes on each host system so you don’t need to specify these although it would be nice to have the option to block some volumes if you wanted. During policy creation you can also apply a schedule that determines when jobs can or can’t run and you can use these to suspend activities on specific dates.

PerfectDisk another defrag option

Dave, As someone who works for a disk defrag vendor, I am always glad to see articles about disk defragmentation. This is no exception; however I would like to make a few points to your readers that may be of interest and where you seem to have stated your opinions as fact. - Diskeeper ...."has maintained its podium position as the professiona disk defragmenter of choice." -> That would appear to be your point of view, which of course is 100% valid for you to have. I would point out that it would depend on whose podium you are referring to. For example, Windows IT Pro chose PerfectDisk over Diskeeper as its defragmenter of choice. Similar awards and accolades for PerfectDisk have come from Redmond Magazine, PC Magazine, CNET editors, About.Com, The Great Defrag Shootout, and others. PerfectDisk is the preferred choice of Microsoft MVPs. It is used by some of the world's largest companies (including Micrsoft) and millions of small business and consumers. So to present it as the only viable option, in light of other very reputable reviewers. analysts and IT professionals' opinions would seem to be not telling the complete story to your readers. - "VMware users can look away now" -> Thousands of IT professionals and companies using virtualization technologies from multiple vendors are not, and have not been, looking away from PerfectDisk - rather, they are using it for their virtualization disk defragmentation needs. PerfectDisk pioneered virtualization defragmentation over a year ago with PerfectDisk VMware, and furthered its leadership position earlier this year. It supports not only Hyper-V, but also ESX Server and in fact any Windows-based host for sophisticated virtualization solutions that are in use today. PerfectDisk's patent-pending Virtual Aware defrag is the first ever, centrally manageable defragmentation client that is both aware of its virtual existence and able to dynamically adjust its resource consumption behavior with respect to its physical server load for any Windows-based host. - The only other significant extra feature is the TVE (terabyte volume engine), which is designed to handle very high storage capacities. -> Just one of the reasons PerfectDisk is the choice of many large enterprises is that there is no extra charge for multi-terabyte support, and it is even offered at the client level. - Diskeeper has been working hard on its business disk defragmenting solutions and it shows as this latest version delivers more features than any other product on the market. -> We respect Diskeeper as a hard-working competitor. At Raxco Software, we've been working hard too. This has led us to come out with ground-breaking solutions in the virtualization market and much more. Again, I completely respect your opinion of any other product. However, I do believe you do your readers a disservice by excluding reference to the other major player in this important market, one that has received and achieved high words of praise from other industry-leading voices. Thanks, Joe Abusamra Vice President of Operations Raxco Software, Inc. www.perfectdisk.com www.perfectdiskblog.com

Official Response from Diskeeper

I have been with Diskeeper for 19 years. I love this company. I believe in its products. And I have seen countless testimonials from our great customers. So I thank IT Pro for doing a great review and for the opportunity to provide this response to Joe. In short, Diskeeper has indeed maintained its podium position as the professional disk defragmenter of choice. 450 of this year’s Fortune 500 are Diskeeper customers. If you prefer a longer term look however, then last year’s market share figures issued by 3rd party analysts, NPD Group, clearly show that 99.2% of ALL DEFRAGMENTER sales through distribution were Diskeeper. Even if I offer Joe generous leeway for sales through other outlets, the missing gap of adoption is enormous. CIOs and IT Managers have already spoken with their hard earned dollars and Diskeeper is the most widely adopted professional grade defragmenter on the planet. As for the preferred defragmenter of choice by Microsoft MVPs, 58% of the entire worldwide MVP database use Diskeeper as of this writing. And lastly, as for Joe’s company being close with Microsoft as a customer, his very own blog post from this week tells the tale: “It can be interesting at times to deal with the bureaucracy out in Redmond. Or annoying. In any event, we have finally found our way into Microsoft’s Virtualization Solution catalog.” – Joe Abusamra, Raxco Diskeeper has great fans and customers at Microsoft—the Product Managers for Essential Business Server, Small Business Server and even Windows Home Server all use Diskeeper to eradicate fragmentation. But don’t take my word on it: here is what Microsoft’s Windows Sever Marketing Product Manager has to say about our Diskeeper 2009 defragmentation technology which, by the way, works on both VMware and Hyper-V: "After independent testing, we found that Diskeeper´s automatic defragmenter not only exploits Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V capabilities but also is designed to meet mission-critical expectations in a virtualized environment." We have a special relationship with Microsoft and besides Diskeeper 2009 have also created a new and dedicated virtual platform disk optimizer for their Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V that we launched today. So if you’re you’re into virtual technology and are considering Hyper-V as an option, check it out! Validation

This is why we love competing in this marketplace with Derek and his company! As usual, I am happy to see his reply here, an indication that he recognizes PerfectDisk as a legitimate competitor. I agree Diskeeper is #1 in market share; I was just pointing out it is not the only game in town. NPD numbers are not an indication of total market share, and Gartner Group, IDC and our enterprise and business sales force would confirm that. Whether Derek has been with Diskeeper for 19 years or 29 years, I congratulate him on his service to his company. I'm also happy to see he follows us by reading my blog and other information of ours. As for Microsoft's bureaucracy, I stand by my statement. I love my wife, but that doesn't mean I don't need to go through red tape with her as well at times. We deal with Microsoft well enough to become the first defragmenter certified by Microsoft for Vista, for example. So we got there first either through a good relationship or great technology, or perhaps both. I stand by by original comment - I completely respect Dave's opinion. Thankfully, IT professionals, consumers, and reviewers all do their due diligence, and it has led to real awards for PerfectDisk. Sometimes Diskeeper wins, sometimes PerfectDisk does. The good news for professionals and consumers? There's a choice, and that can only make both of us better. As always, we encourage users to try them both out side by side to reach their own conclusions. Reviews like this by Dave can only help. Thanks, Joe
