Parliamentary committee to examine broadband speeds

The Business and Enterprise Committee, a cross party group in parliament, has announced it will be carrying out an inquiry into broadband speeds in the UK following the release of Lord Carter’s Digital Britain report earlier this month.

In the report, Lord Carter promised that everybody in the UK would be able to access a minimum of 2MB broadband by 2012 - which would be funded with a new broadband tax of £6 per year on everyone with a fixed landline.

The committee will examine areas such as whether the target of 2MB is ambitious enough and if the proposed levy is fair, as well as looking into current regulations and whether ISPs provide the speeds they claim to in their advertising.

All written evidence must be received by the committee before Friday 25 September.
