Broadband

BT has announced the next 69 locations set to receive its super-fast broadband in the UK.

The rollout, run by BT’s Openreach division, will give 1.5 million homes access to high speed fibre internet by early summer 2010 although BT have promised one million of those will have access by March.

Steve Robertson, chief executive of Openreach, said: “Fibre is the future and so we’re speeding up the pace of our plans. We had aimed to get fibre to half a million homes by next March but we’re now being far more ambitious.”

BT plans to make the super-fast broadband available to 40 per cent of the UK by 2012, the same time that Lord Carter wants everyone in the UK to have access to a minimum of 2Mbps according to the Digital Britain report.

Pilot schemes for the super-fast broadband began on Monday in Muswell Hill and Whitchurch, South Wales, providing speeds of up to 40Mbps for 30,000 homes.
