AMD's power-saving 6-core Opterons target datacentre
By Benny Har-Even,
AMD’s family of six-core Opteron processors got a little larger today with the launch of new power saving members.
The chip company said that the new 55 watt ‘HE’ processors offers up to 18 per cent lower power consumption over the whole platform compared to the standard 75 watt versions, in addition to 18 per cent better performance-per-watt compared to its quad-core processors.
The processors as were intended for ‘dynamic, performance hungry and power constrained data centres’, according to AMD.
“These new lower power six-core AMD Opteron processors feature the highest performance-per-watt that we have brought to market, and help drive down power consumption while addressing the shifting cloud and web landscape of today’s datacentre,” said Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager of AMD's server business, in a statement.
The processors feature many benefits likely to tempt data centre managers, such as AMD-V tech for virtualisation, and AMD-P for advanced power management.
The new processors are the 2.1GHz 8245 HE, for 4 and 8-socket servers, the 2425 HE (2.1GHz) and the 2423 HE (2GHz), designed for 2-socket systems. IT PRO was waiting for confirmation of UK pricing at time of publication.
AMD also said that even lower power versions of its processors would be available later this year.
In addition, AMD said that those looking for raw performance can also now get hold of full power AMD Opteron SE processors for 2-,4- and 8-way systems running at 2.8GHz.
