Mozilla's Firefox is set to mark a billion downloads today or later this weekend.

The counter on the Spread Firefox website was at 999,792,859 at the time of writing. The count includes all full downloads since the browser launched in 2004, but does not include automatic updates.

"Mozilla has come a very long way from the start and are very proud of this massive milestone," Mozilla said in a statement. "This accomplishment is a direct result of the continually growing Mozilla community and Firefox supporters."

Depending on the analytics company, Firefox holds close to 30 per cent, with Internet Explorer slipping below 60 per cent.

Firefox saw eight million downloads in a single day when it made it released 3.0 last year, but has upgraded to Firefox 3.5 since.
