O2 signs navigation deal with Telmap
By Maggie Holland,
Moving itself away from the shadow of recent network crashes, O2 today announced plans to embed Telmap navigation software on the majority of its GPS-enabled handsets.
The move could also be replicated outside the UK by O2’s parent company Telefonica.
The Telmap software has been optimised to run on O2’snetwork, with the navigation company also offering billing and customer support to reduce any hiccups, according to a statement issued by O2.
Users will be able to try before they buy with a 14-day free trial run of the software. If they then decide to buy the full version, the fee will be added to their monthly mobile bill.
“This is a pioneering agreement between operator and application developer which we believe will set a benchmark for future agreements,” said Peter Rampling, O2’s marketing director, in a statement.
“We have worked closely with Telmap to build a service wrap around the application which we believe will offer the best customer experience. Navigation is fast becoming one of the most popular mobile services and we look forward to bringing this leading application to our customers.”
The first fruits of the new joint agreement – under which existing customers with compatible handsets can download the Telmap software – will be available this autumn.
