Police warn of text and drive dangers

Gwent Police are trying to educate youngsters of the harrowing consequences of trying to text while at the wheel with a grim, but realistic video.

Texting while at the wheel

Police in Wales are trying to hammer home just how dangerous it can be to send text messages while at the wheel, by using a shocking video at the heart of their campaign.

Gwent Police called on Brynmawr filmmaker Peter Watkins-Hughes to make the film dubbed COW, which focuses on what happens to fictional character Cassie Cowan and her friends when she texts and drives at the same time.

It will be shown at schools across the area, with hopes it can become a core part of educational awareness elsewhere in Wales and the UK.

“Making and receiving calls and texting whilst driving is still happening on roads not just in Gwent but all over the country. Seeing a scenario, like the one Cassie goes through, played out right before your eyes makes you realise how extremely dangerous it can be and what devastating consequences it can have,” said Chief Inspector John Pavett from Gwent Police Roads Policing Unit, in a statement.

“I hope that after watching this film motorists will think twice before picking up their mobile phone when behind the wheel and realise that a quick reply to a text message or answering a phone call is never worth putting theirs and other people’s lives at risk.”
