Twitter will roll out paid-for business accounts

Could Twitter soon be finally making some money from its many business users?

By Asavin Wattanajantra, 26 Aug 2009 at 11:52

Twitter could soon be making money from business users, with new commercial accounts charging users for specific services.

In an interview with Venture Beat, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said that the company was in the first stages of rolling out commercial accounts.

Twitter could release APIs (application programming interfaces) specifically aimed at companies later this year.

“Twitter will be free for everybody and we’ll still tell them to go crazy with it," Stone was quoted as saying. “But we’ve identified a selection of things that businesses say are helping them make more profit.”

Stone didn’t elaborate much more on the plans, but it is already clear that Twitter is making a conscious effort to make more of its business benefits.

Twitter has an official business guide for companies looking to make the most of the platform, and check out our beginner’s guide to Twitter for business here.

Twitter has not yet replied to a request to confirm Stone’s remarks.
