Parallels Desktop 4

Parallels, known for its Mac desktop virtualisation software, has launched Parallels Desktop 4 for Windows and Linux, which it claims is up to eight times faster than the older version.

The software will enable users to run multiple Windows or Linux virtual machines on a desktop PC at the same time, reducing hardware costs, according to Parallels.

The company also believes its software will enable widespread adoption of virtualisation in business.

"Desktop virtualisation is expanding into mainstream areas such as enterprise-wide desktop deployment and we envision IT environments where VMs can be deployed quickly and freely between different platforms, helping individuals and businesses maximise the value of computing," said chief executive Serguei Beloussov, in a statement.

The speed increase is due to the fact that the new version can use Intel VT-x and AMD-V CPU technologies, and for its support for up to eight virtual CPUs and eight gigabytes of virtual RAM.

The software is available now from the Parallels web site for £54.99
