Toshiba announces its biggest small hard disk drive yet
By Jennifer Scott,
Toshiba today launched its latest 2.5 inch hard disk drive (HDD) with the largest capacity the company has ever provided.
The MK6465GSX dual platter drive comes with 640GB capacity and is capable of 5400 RPM, which the company claims has energy consumption of only 0.00086W/GB - an 80 per cent reduction when compared to 3.5 inch drives.
“In today’s digital content-based world the demand for storage capacity continues to increase," Martin Larsson, vice president and general manager of the Toshiba Europe storage device division, said in a statement.
“The MK6465GSX… provides the ideal solution for OEMs looking to increase storage capacity without impacting on portability or power consumption.”
This HDD is the high end of a new range from Toshiba that starts with 160GB capacity. Designed for devices with limited space, such as netbooks or games consoles, the drives all have interface speeds of 3Gbps and an impressive areal density of up to 528.5GB per square inch.
The product will be available in the fourth quarter of this year.
