Market doubles as 10Gb Ethernet rides recession
By Jennifer Scott,
Many hardware sectors may be suffering in the heat of the recession, but the 10Gb Ethernet network adapter market is still keeping its cool and doing better than ever.
A new report from the Dell’Oro Group has shown double digit growth in both shipments and revenues for the market over the second quarter of 2009.
Back in June, the European vice president of Blade Network Technologies, which produces 48 per cent of the ethernet switch market, told IT PRO 10Gb Ethernet was going to “take over” but the issue holding it back was cost.
However, this latest shift in market momentum has led to a steep drop in the average prices of the products.
Seamus Crehan, vice president of the group, said in a statement: "Numerous factors are falling into place to drive steep 10GB Ethernet network adapter price declines."
He added: “These include the migration from single to dual-port cards, as well as a mix shift to copper-based technologies.”
A number of big players are making strong pushes into the 10Gb ethernet market such as Brocade and Cisco, with other hardware vendors teaming up with networking companies to provide full data centre solutions.
