Toshiba unveils 160GB single platter 1.8 inch HDD
By Jennifer Scott,
Toshiba has today launched a new range of single platter 1.8 inch hard disk drives (HDD).
The MKxx34GAL range comes in capacities of 60Gb, 80Gb, 120Gb and 160Gb. The 160Gb top of the range model is the highest capacity that Toshiba has ever released on this size of product, able to store up to 80,000 mp3 songs or 141 hours of DVD quality video.
Martin Larsson, vice president and general manager of the Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division, said in a statement: “Consumers are cautious in their purchasing choices and it is up to the manufacturers to meet their requirements by choosing the right components that will create the perfect device to further empower today’s busy and mobile customer.”
Energy consumption is low with the company claiming only 0.0019 watts/GB is used. The areal density is up to 467 gigabits per square inch and weighs a maximum of 48 grams. The range is also very quiet, making just 15 decibels of noise when operating.
All these features make it especially suitable for the mp3 market, Toshiba noted.
This latest launch follows the announcement of its highest capacity 2.5 inch hard disk drive last week.
The HDDs are available now to OEMs.
