Mozilla has released version 3.5.3 of its Firefox internet browser, patching a series of security flaws.

The upgrade, which was announced overnight, is "part of Mozilla’s ongoing stability and security update process," according to the Mozilla Developer Centre.

The update, which is free and available for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems, is more stable and secure than previous versions, according to Mozilla.

Among the security updates is one which prevents location bar spoofing. Previously, a newly-opened window or tab could have its URL masked in the address bar, making it difficult for users to tell whether they were at a genuine website.

Mozilla has also applied the same updates to Firefox 3, an older build of the browser that the organisation said it will support and update until January 2010.

It was revealed yesterday that Mozilla intends to release the next major upgrade of Firefox, version four, by the fourth quarter of 2010. The next version of the browser will feature a new user interface, a new extensibility platform and increased speed, claimed Mozilla.
