Toshiba expands 2.5in HDD range for high-end laptops
By Jennifer Scott,
Toshiba has unveiled a new range of 2.5in HDDs designed for use in high performance laptops.
The high-end version, the MK5056GSY, is a 500GB model that operates at 7,200rpm, and offers an internal transfer rate of 1,255Mbps. Areal density is 395Gb per sq/in.
Toshiba also claims that despite the high density and fast speeds the HDD has green credentials as it only consumes 0.0020 watts per GB. This also lengthens battery life on a laptop.
Martin Larsson, vice president and general manager of Toshiba’s Europe storage device division, said: “The future of computing is portable… Consequently there is huge market demand for devices that offer desktop-level performance while on the go.”
“Today’s consumers don’t want to compromise storage capacities, battery life or speed for the sake of portability, and the latest developments in HDD technology mean they don’t have to.”
The model is also available in 160GB, 250GB or 320GB capacities and all have a 16MB disk cache. All four will begin shipping in the fourth quarter of this year.
