AMD has announced a new platform for enterprise customers featuring its Quad-Core Opteron processor and two new server chipsets, the SR5690 and SP5100.

By using seven processors in three power bands alongside the new chipsets the company claims it can increase performance per watt for enterprise-level customers.

“The gap in performance and power efficiency requirements is closing between typical data centre servers and edge-of-network systems," said Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager of Server and Embedded Business at AMD, in a statement.

“Now, our commitment to the embedded market is stronger than ever as we bring new levels of performance combined with AMD’s new server chipset to our embedded customers in enterprise markets.”

The platform is designed for what the company calls “edge-of-the-network systems” including storage, routers, switches and security servers. It supports virtualised environments and offers compatibility between various processor generations.

Andy Mills, vice president of Marketing and Business Development at Dot Hill Systems, said in a statement: “Our RAIDCore Virtual RAID Adapter solution offers enterprise customers sophisticated RAID capabilities. With AMD's multicore CPUs powering Dot Hill RAIDCore VRA technology, users have the ability to effectively process RAID tasks without compromising performance needed for other operations.”

The announcement comes in the same week Intel holds its Developers Forum in San Francisco, which IT PRO is attending. Intel is believed to be showing off its new Westmere processor.
