Palm Pre arriving in UK on 16 October
By Jennifer Scott,
The Palm Pre will be available in the UK from 16 October exclusively on O2, it was announced today.
For months, the big question has been exactly when the Pre device would hit our shores, following its US launch back in June. O2 had already been confirmed as the exclusive network provider following initial drama over which UK network would get the deal.
The handset will be free for O2 customers taking out a 24 month contract or on an 18 month contract of £44.05 a month minimum, the same that it offers with the 8GB version of the iPhone 3G. On a £34.26 a month contract, customers will have to pay £96.89 for the phone.
It will also be available for free to business account holders on tariffs from £30.91 on a 24 or 36-month contract.
Ronan Dunne, chief executive of O2 UK, said in a statement: “Today’s announcement reinforces O2’s position as the home of the smartphone.”
However, the announcement does raise questions about how long O2 can continue to keep iPhone exclusivity as well as the new Palm device, which has been cited by many as the smartphone that may just topple Apple’s dominance.
