Live 3D arrives at IDF
By Nicole Kobie in San Francisco,
Live, real-time 3D television helped close today's Intel Developer Forum (IDF).
Justin Rattner, director of Intel Labs, told attendees to check under their chairs, where they found a pair of thick, black 3D glasses. Rattner then introduced Howard Postley, chief technology officer of 3ality, who he spoke to via live 3D broadcast before bringing him on stage.
According to Astley: "The cameras talk to each other and are coordinated by computers looking at inputs while managing a single holistic 3D space."
The live demo showed Postley speaking to Rattner, while cleaning staff wandered in the background in the main hall of IDF.
The demonstration then switched to a clip of a U2 concert, which drew an appreciative response from the crowds.
After that, the broadcast switched to a short clip of a National Football League game to demonstrate just how well the 3D worked with sports content.
Light Peak
Noting the rather large loop of cables stacked under the pair of cameras, Astley explained that a single broadcast requires 40 cameras and 5,000 cables, as each two-camera set produces 6Gpbs of video data and another 5Gpbs of meta data.
Rattner used the opportunity to show off Intel’s Light Peak technology, unveiled earlier this week. "I may have a solution for your problem – I’m going to show you our Light Peak technology," he said.
The 10Gbps optical cable runs multiple protocols, but isn’t yet available. "Maybe not next week, but soon," Rattner said.
