UK businesses are being given a helping hand to ensure they’re in with a chance of winning some of the big-money supply contracts that are up for grabs at CERN.

UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) are hosting two road shows this week to bring together 76 UK firms and officials from the home of the Large Hadron Collider.

In 2008, the European particle physics laboratory spent £110 million on supply contracts, demonstrating the scale of the opportunity on offer to these tendering companies in the areas of IT, mechanical engineering and electronics.

“Working with CERN is not only a feather in the cap for a British company but also an excellent business opportunity,” said UKTI chief executive Sir Andrew Cahn, in a statement.

“Firms which meet the highest scientific standards required by this facility win not only business but also a world-class endorsement of their innovation and quality.”

Most (90 per cent) of CERN’s contracts are below £6,000 but there is also larger amounts on the table depending on the nature of the deal.
