Virgin Media tops broadband speed poll
By Jennifer Scott,
Virgin Media has again topped a broadband poll of the best average download speeds, it was confirmed today.
The monthly speed test by Broadband.co.uk has put the company top yet again for the month of September 2009, with an average speed of 7.238Mbps.
The website said in a statement: “During September 2009 Virgin Media have yet again extended their lead as the UK's fastest broadband supplier however their average speed is no longer rising.”
Second place was awarded to O2 which managed an average of 5.535Mbps, followed in third place by TalkTalk on an average of 3.402Mbps.
However, the best average upload speed went to O2 although it was still low at 0.738Mbps. Virgin then took second spot on 0.513 and TalkTalk again came third with 0.461.
The overall UK download speed average came out as 4.361Mbps but was lifted significantly by the performance of the top two contenders. Average upload speed sat at 0.441Mbps.

I find it hard to believe that Virgin Media provide an average Broadband speed of in excess of 7Mbs. MY average from them, over about two years, is less than about 600Kbps!

Yes But!
Yes they may be fast, I check my own and get similar figures but you have to have a phone line that has a connection charge of 9.79P per call, a one minute call costs 13P.

Virgin Phones
@delturner: Yes, they really are an unpleasant organization which is why I'm leaving after many years. If you don't take a Virgin phone line you do not get the better deals. In a large font at the top of the Virgin price plans it states that you do not need a BT phone line thus saving £11.25, but a Vigin phone line costs £11.00. Furthermore, if you don't have a Vigin phone line (which I don't) then when the Virgin cable modem fails (which mine has on numerous occasions) you are forced to contact them on an expensive premium rate number. It's clear whose side Ofcom is on.

Well done Virgin!
Recognition at last! Granted, VM's customer service still has a long way to go but their broadband (cable) service is second to none in the UK! I have the 20Mbit/s service and it's regularly with 10% of that speed. For a bit more cash I could have 50Mbit/s - try getting that from the competition...

How much?
@masher: You don't by any chance work for Branson do you? As a matter of interest how much is your 20Mbit/s service? And how much is "a bit more cash..." for the 50Mbit/s service?
