IBM is increasing its presence in the cloud computing space, offering a new storage proposition for large businesses.

The IBM Smart Business Storage Cloud is the company’s version of a private cloud, offering multiple terabytes of storage and claiming high levels of scalability.

This includes the new IBM Information Archive. The hardware and software solution enables businesses to leverage different tiers of storage regardless of whether they use disk or tape. This can then be accessed in the cloud, even if it is stored on tape.

The software infrastructure offering and the online information archive is coupled with consulting services from the company.

IBM also claimed that it is a secure solution that builds on existing security and authentication processes within the company.

This private cloud is the first of IBM’s cloud offerings to be available both on premises and as an outsourced solution. The company said it was just the beginning and will be working on offering public cloud storage in the future.
