What makes the iPhone a business phone?

Since the iPhone’s inception in 2007, it has become the fastest selling phone on the market. But what's behind the explosion in sales from such a new operating system and device?

There are so my applications on the App Store, as the advert says, there’s an application for everything.

Lin uses his iPhone for its Mail application, Sky News, Skype, iMargon (a sales margin calculator), Mover (a file transfer app) and LinkedIn.

Tompson uses his for social networking using Tweetie or Tweetdeck.

“Occasionally I'll use mapping software when going to see a customer. I have used Google Maps and GPS to help me walk from a Tube station to a street address a couple of times,” he said.

“The iPhone makes it easier to communicate and be more responsive. I can easily access files and respond quickly without having to use my laptop. Other manufacturers are pushing themselves in order to compete and to try to offer the same 'Ease of Use' features,” explained Donaghy.

Toney Jennings, president and chief executive of CoreTrace Corporation, agreed, saying: “It has made it an easier and a better experience to do things that used to be the domain of the laptop/desktop because they had better interfaces for doing so. The iPhone offers an acceptable experience/interface for these things and even a great interface for certain gaming and other apps.”

Apple has changed the face of mobile communications, according to Lin.

“By allowing an iPhone user to effectively carry their computer around with them, be it for personal or business use they are always contactable and available through Mail, VOIP or the traditional method of the phone call," Lin concluded.

iPhone and Exchange

We issued iPhones to our staff to widespread delight that continues unabated. Apart from the rotten battery life, two issues I've had are we lost our exchange server for a period and the synching process wiped everyone's contacts when it couldn't find the server, and the phones are prone to dropping the carrier signal and taking a very long time to find it again - flight mode on and off speeds things up a bit but shouldn't really be the way. Pros far outway the cons though. I've gone from an avid loather of all things Apple to at least a begrudging admirer of the iPhone!
