TalkTalk adds subscribers, but Tiscali loses out

Carphone Warehouse's broadband arm signed up 77,000 new subscribers, but warns that the market is still tough.

Carphone Warehouse has added more broadband subscribers than expected in the second quarter of this year.

The company added 77,000 subscribers to its TalkTalk broadband arm, almost doubling the initial forecast of 41,000 for the period.

Despite the good news, finance director Roger Taylor said it doesn't mean the market has recovered.

"The worst seems to be over, but there’s not much grounds for there to be a huge upturn in the economy either,” he told Reuters in an interview.

"We see this current consumer environment potentially sustained for another 12 to 18 months," he added.

While TalkTalk is winning customers, Carphone's recent acquisition Tiscali posted less impressive figures. It lost 62,000 broadband subscribers in the quarter, but the Carphone Warehouse said it would receive a rebate on the initial deal to compensate for the loss.

Talk Talk increase - Tiscali decrease!!

I'm with Tiscali broadband and 24/7 free phone call package.
Soon after Tiscali was taken over by Talk Talk I received a phone call from Carphone Warehouse tempting me to transfer to Talk Talk - I declined.
I wonder how many others took up the offer - no wonder Tiscali is 62,000 down and Talk Talk gained 77,000.
Very clever, Carphone Warehouse now gets a rebate on the purchase price!!
