Vodafone has teamed up with Decho to offer both businesses and consumers cloud-based backup services.

Decho, owned by EMC, has made a name for itself with its own online backup service called Mozy, but is now transferring this experience over to Vodafone’s customers.

Harel Kodesh, chief executive of Decho, said in a statement: “The explosive growth in both business and consumer information is driving demand for new personal cloud services to help people protect, organise and enrich their most valuable information.”

He added: "Building on the proven Mozy online backup service will differentiate Vodafone’s services and make it easier for millions of people to access and manage the information they need to do their job or run their lives each day.”

The first announcement of the partnership is Vodafone PC Backup. This is a cloud-based storage offering allowing users to securely store their documents externally and be able to access them from a web browser from any device.

The companies plan to release both business and consumer versions, along with Vodafone’s mobile and PC security suite. The business edition will include a web-based management console for administrators to centrally control the storage.

“Our customers are often using a range of connected devices each day, with different information and data contained on each one,” added Huw Medcraft, director of mobile broadband at Vodafone, in a statement.

“Vodafone PC Backup will enable them to centrally store this content, providing users with the added reassurance that as a Vodafone customer their files – be they critical work documents for businesses or family photographs - will be there when they need it and accessible through a variety of devices and across both fixed and mobile networks.”

The PC Backup product will be rolled out across Europe by the end of the year, although no specific UK date has been announced as yet.

Vodafone also told IT PRO that further products from the partnership are due to be released over the next 12 months.
