Sun slashes 3,000 jobs

Sun Microsystems is to cut 3,000 jobs over the next year, blaming delays in the acquisition deal with Oracle.

Sun announced this cut, representing roughly 10 per cent of its workforce, in a regulatory filing yesterday. The cuts will cost the firm $75 million to $125 million in severance payments.

The company had already made 6,000 job cuts in the past year.

Oracle bought Sun for $7.4 billion back in April, but despite the deal receiving approval from US courts, the European Competition Commission was less sure.

It is now undertaking an antitrust probe to decide whether it is fair for Oracle to own both its own database products and Sun’s MySQL. The results aren’t expected until January next year.

IT PRO contacted Sun for comment but the company had not responded to our request at the time of publication.
