Week in Review: Windows 7 launches
By Benny Har-Even,
It was clearly a big week for Microsoft as Windows 7 finally became available at retail, letting end users get the operating system that enthusiasts and early adopters have been using since January.
Generally, people seem positive about the operating system, in terms of reviews and sales, as even the likes of Dell admit that Vista didn’t work out that well.
Naturally, Apple was ready to fight back and, with timing that surely was no coincidence, announced a number of new products such as a refreshed MacBook, iMacs with larger screen sizes, an interesting server-only Mac mini, and an intriguing touch sensitive mouse.
Mozilla decided to not block a Microsoft plug-in for Firefox that was said to contain a critical vulnerability, after it discovered that it couldn’t be exploited, but another part of the plug-in remained blocked.
Yahoo announced a huge jump in profits after job cuts, while Sun announced 3,000 job losses of its own.
An eBook reader based on Android was revealed, as 3 announced the HTC Hero as the first Android phone on its books, bundling a Spotify Premium deal into the bargain.
The week ended with a big surprise, as Nokia announced that it had filed a law suit against Apple, for allegedly infringing 10 of its patents. It seems that the Finnish mobile giant is tired with Apple seemingly running away with the mobile market, using what it claims is its own technology.
