Emulex has today launched its Universal Converged Network Adapters (UCNAs) called OneConnect.

Available now with 10Gb Ethernet and iSCSI connectivity – and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FcoE) later in the year - the UCNAs offer the ability to converge data centre cables through one device.

It focuses on the adapter at the server level and offers a pay-as-you-go model for its customers.

During a presentation at Storage Networking World (SNW) in Frankfurt, Steve O'Donnell, senior analyst for the Enterprise Strategy Group, said: “The key message in the real world when you build a rack, you put light guides and patch panels and when you need to plug things together, you get someone in. With this new tech there is no need to.”

“It is a one wire physical infrastructure that leverages the ability of virtual machines,” he said.

As well as increasing input/output (IO) speeds, the OneConnect claims to cut costs within the data centre.

Shaun Walsh, vice president of marketing at Emulex, said: “You can save 28 per cent on switches and apdapters... 42 per cent on power and cooling [and] 80 per cent on cabling.”

Pricing for the UCNAs start at $1,136.
