A buyer's guide to the top 10 smartphones

In the latest of our series of buyers' guides, we look at the pick of the bunch when it comes to smartphones.

By Maggie Holland, 1 Dec 2009 at 08:00

iPhone 3GS

BlackBerry Storm2 (9520)

The original Storm was aesthetically pleasing but it wasn’t perfect. The Storm2 removes the gap between the 3.25in touch screen and casing and adds Wi-Fi to the mix.

With a more responsive entry method, finessed looks and a features set that will please both business users and consumers alike, the Storm2 gets our vote. BlackBerry Storm2

HTC Magic

A sleek design means this phone has the wow factor before you even switch it on. And then when you do it’s, thankfully, not an anti-climax.

When we reviewed it, it lacked Exchange support out-of-the-box, but that omission was over shadowed by a lightweight and well-featured device that outshone its predecessor the Android-based G1.

HTC Touch Diamond2

The original Touch Diamond was a best seller. The sequel is even better.

With a sophisticated design and an uber responsive touch screen that shuns the use of the provided stylus as a necessity, we were impressed. In addition, the ability to be able to view communications and interactions with colleagues, family and friends in a unified way grouped by the individual rather than the method, will give the busy user more time back for other tasks.

At the time of review, we thought it was the best HTC device we’d seen to date. HTC Touch Diamond2

Very Distinct Omission!

Can the reviewers please inform us why on earth did the Samsung i8910 HD not get a mention? How smart has a smartphone got to be to impress you guys? Please try and provide an explanation to maintain any credibility. Yours respectfully S Holden

Omission

grafix: Thanks for your comment. We wouldn't disagree that the Samsung i8910 HD is a quality smartphone, but we had to make the cut somewhere on our top 10. Had we had an 'others to consider' section, this would have definitely made it in. That's something we'll certainly bear in mind for other buyers' guides. Thanks, Maggie

Apple comes out on top..

Of all the smartphones and 'iPhone killers', having used a few of these handsets, I think Apple still comes out on top by offering the most user friendly and sleek user interface. This aspect of the phone use makes a huge difference on day to day use.
