Palm Pre users lose cloud data
By Jennifer Scott,
Palm Pre users have lost data from the company’s cloud backup service, it has been confirmed today.
The device, only launched in the UK last month, is having problems restoring data from Palm’s cloud if the user resets their handset and attempts to restore their backed up data.
UK customers can breathe a sigh of relief for now, as it only seems to be US users reporting the problem leading to lost calendars, memos and tasks.
A statement from the company said: “Palm is aware that a small number of customers have experienced issues transferring their Palm Profile information to another Palm webOS device.”
It added: “Palm and Sprint are working closely together to support these customers to successfully transfer their information to the new device.”
The backup failure is similar to that faced by T-Mobile Sidekick users in the US back in October. Danger, a subsidiary of Microsoft, ended up deleting users' backed up data due to a technical glitch in its cloud system.

Onto my second Palm Pre since launch in the UK. Having resolved initial problems and then problems with the touchstone and ventured off on a business trip on 3rd Dec. On the flight with Palm Pre on Aeroplane mode I started listening to my music. After 15 mins the music stopped and the Palm Pre reset it self. No Music no way of setting up until I landed. This I did. However not all my calendar was restored even though it is supposed to back up daily. None of my music or photo's or text messages were restored. Luckily my major phone numbers were on my sim otherwise despair. Having called the O2 Palm Pre centre, was told nothing that they could do it was all 'gone'. So hours of transferring Music and photo's were wasted as well as the time allocating photo's to phone numbers. Apparently we must drag and save photos and music to our PC/Laptop/Notepad and carry this with you at all times just in case of loss of data so that it can be restored (so why the cloud?)Hard lesson learned with this loss. So business appointments lost as well as comments in the calendar and important text message details. Called the O2 centre again today to cancel my Palm Pre and maybe try the Iphone but alas, today their system is down so will try tomorrow to cancel.
