ECB disk storage market in decline

This area of the storage market may have again shown revenue decline but a principal Gartner analyst claims it is not as bad as previous quarters.

Yet another area of the hardware market has taken a hit this week, according to Gartner.

The analyst firm released a report showing revenues in the external controller-based (ECB) disk storage market have dived 7.3 per cent in the third quarter, compared to the same period in 2008.

Although ECB storage has taken another hit, one of Gartner's experts claims that things are in better shape than in previous declines.

Donna Taylor, principal research analyst for Gartner’s global Storage Quarterly Statistics programme, said in a statement: “The year-over-year decline of 7.3 per cent indicates that the economic downturn’s impact on the disk array storage market is loosening its grip. The prior two quarters in 2009 showed declines in the double digits.”

She added: “This is good news for storage vendors, because it’s the first sign of a light at the end of the tunnel.”

There weren’t any massive surprises in company revenue market share with EMC heading up the list with 26.7 per cent, more than double its nearest competitor IBM.

Sun Microsystems propped up the bottom of the list coming in seventh place with just 3.6 per cent of the market share.
