Texters up their game during festive period

This Christmas may well break a record for the volume of text and picture messaging, according to mobile giant Orange.

Brits' hunger for texting is likely to surge during the festive period, leading to this Christmas creating a record for the amount of texts and picture messages sent and received.

So claims mobile giant Orange who predicts that people will increasingly use this medium as a way of passing on their seasonal greetings to family and friends.

While Orange's network sees millions of SMS and MMS items passing through on a daily basis, last Christmas Day saw more than 100 million texts and one million picture messages.

That's small fry compared to the predictions for this year, according to Orange, with around 1.1 million picture messages depicting everything from trees to turkeys, expected to pass through the network.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, New Year's Eve will also be particularly busy text-wise, with a prediction that more than 120 million messages will be sent - beating last year's 106 million.
