Google has updated its Android mobile operating system, releasing the software development kit (SDK) for version 2.1 of the OS.

Android 2.1 is already available on the newly released Google Nexus One handset, but can now also be downloaded by developers.

Google described the update as a "minor platform release" and noted that it "does not add significant user features."

Still, it does include a few bug fixes and API tweaks, including the ability to develop animated wallpapers, display signal strength and voice recognition, as well as changes to WebKit.

Motorola Europe told its fans on Facebook last week that its MILESTONE and DEXT handsets would be updated to Android 2.1 shortly, with the former being upgraded within two months.
