The materials that make up the newly unveiled Google Nexus One handset cost about $175, according to a breakdown from industry analyst iSuppli.

In its bill of materials (BOM) breakdown, iSuppi found the hardware and components to make the Nexus One cost $174.15, with the phone selling for $529 without a contract, and $179 with one, in the US. While the margin may seem high, the breakdown doesn’t take into account manufacturing, software or accessories costs, or the cost to develop the device.

The Apple iPhone 3GS had a BOM of $178.96 at its launch last summer, and ships for between $199 and $299 on a contract in the US.iSuppli Breakdown

According to the price breakdown, the most expensive component in the Nexus One is the Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm at $30.50, followed by the 3.7in OLED display from Samsung at $23.50. For a full list of the priced components, see below.

“With the Nexus One, Google has taken the most advanced features seen in recent smart phone designs and wrapped them up into a single sleek design,” noted Kevin Keller, senior analyst at iSuppli, in a statement.

“Items like the durable uni-body construction, the blazingly fast Snapdragon baseband processor and the bright and sharp Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AM-OLED) display all have been seen in previous phones, but never before combined into a single design,” he added. “This gives the Nexus One the most advanced features of any smart phone ever dissected by iSuppli’s Teardown Analysis Service - a remarkable feat given the product’s BOM is similar to comparable products introduced during the past year.”
