BT reaches one million Wi-Fi hotspot milestone
By Maggie Holland,
The UK now plays home to more than one million BT Wi-Fi hotspots, it was confirmed this week.
The comms giant set itself the goal of creating a million-strong network and has now done so thanks to implementations in businesses, city centres and homes.
While a million may seem like a too many hotspots, it's clear there's a great deal of demand from users. Indeed, BT predicts that users will spend more than one billion 'Wi-Fi minutes' online in 2010.
"Whether at home, at work or when out and about, wireless access is central to keeping people and communities better connected," said Gavin Patterson, BT Retail's chief executive, in a statement.
"We’ve grown from 500,000 to one million hotspots within six months, and will continue to add more to meet demand from smartphone, laptop, iPod and now e-reader users."
