Intel yesterday announced that Sean Maloney, the man tipped to take over the company's helm at some point, is on medical leave after suffering a stroke.

Sean Maloney, the chip giant's executive vice president and general manager of the Intel Architecture Group, is expected to be off work for several months, but will make a full recovery, according to a statement issued by the company.

Dadi Perlmutter, fellow executive vice president who shares the Intel Architecture Group general manager role with Maloney will take over his responsibilities in the meantime.

"I visited with Sean and his sense of humor and determination to return to work fill the room," said Paul Otellini, Intel's president and chief executive, in a statement.

"We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to his return."
