Microsoft unveils more Windows Phone 7 details
By Nicole Kobie,
Microsoft has unveiled more details of its Windows Phone 7 platform today, at the MIX10 show in Las Vegas.
Looking to get into the massive mobile apps market, Microsoft showed off what developers could use in their games and apps running on Windows Phone 7 Series devices.
App development will be based on Silverlight, Microsoft's version of Adobe Flash, which is set for an update next month.
Microsoft said developers could expect handsets with accelerometers, location-based services, a push-notification service, hardware-accelerated video - with DRM - as well as Internet Information Services (IIS) smooth streaming for viewing video and other content.
“Windows Phone 7 Series brings together a rich application environment, powerful hardware, a fresh approach to software and a smart new design,” Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president for Windows Phone Program Management, said in a statement.
Microsoft also showed off its Marketplace for Windows Phone 7, which will allow for ad-funded apps and billing via mobile operators, and let users try apps out before they buy them.
