Intel has claimed its new Xeon 5600 server chips will offer a five month return on investment over single core servers.

Intel's first enterprise processors made on the 32nm process support up to six cores and boosts performance from the last generation by 60 per cent. They include speedy encryption, embedded security features and integrated virtualisation, the firm said.

Formerly codenamed Westmere-EP, One Xeon 5600 server can replace 15 single-core servers, the firm claimed, leading to a five month ROI - a bold claim well timed to take advantage of firms starting to upgrade systems after holding out during the recession.

Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager of the Intel Architecture Group, said in a statement the new processor series will "be the backbone of mainstream computing environments."
