Dell may look to security start-ups to solve cloud issues
By Jennifer Scott,
Security is still a major issue when it comes to the adoption of cloud computing but Dell may look to smaller tech companies to help alleviate any trust issues businesses have with the model.
So claims John Igoe, director of cloud software solutions at Dell, who admitted that security was still an issue when it came to take up of the technology.
“Security is definitely considered a problem when it comes to cloud,” he told IT PRO at the pre-launch party of Dell's 2010 strategy.
“We need to inform customers when it comes to a sales perspective [but] it is not something we would do ourselves.”
However, Igoe admitted Dell may well buy up another company to deal with cloud security issues, even if it wouldn't invest in the research and development of the technologies itself.
Igoe said: “I think start-ups are addressing the problems whilst a lot of the big, traditional companies aren't.”
Admitting that a lot of Dell's success over recent years has been from acquisitions, he concluded: “It is definitely a possibility to buy up something that can do that for us [as] in the next five to eight years you will see us buying up more companies.”
