Acer's professional brand Gateway has joined up with Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) to launch a new storage device aimed at the small and medium-sized business (SMB) market.

The companies made bold claims about the GS2040 - the first SMB targeted product from the joint venture - including 99.999 per cent data availability, at its launch today in Milan.

Roberto Basilio, HDS' vice president of storage product management, said at the conference: “You can access your information no matter what... if one controller fails you can still access the other one, if one path is closed there is another path to go in from.”

Scalability is major feature with the GS2040, which offers up to 120TB. Performance figures claim 400k IOPS capability and it also offers 512 virtual server ports.

The device provides mirror caching for extra protection, an easy wizard based set-up and RAID 6.

The partnership of Acer and HDS started back in 2006 and both companies are keen for it to continue into the future.

“Together we can reach a large space [and] a large market,” added Basilio. “But what is important is our customers. They are paramount to our success.”
