IT job vacancies on the rise

A new survey has shown there is twice the number of permanent positions available in the IT sector compared to this time last year.

Job market

The IT jobs market had a major boost last month with more permanent vacancies available than in any other industry.

This was the finding of a new report, jointly authored by KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Federation, which showed double the permanent roles available than in the same period last year and a slight rise on the figures from February.

There was also positive news for temporary workers, with the IT sector rising from the fourth most required profession to the second, beaten only by the higher need for secretarial staff.

The improvement in the IT sector is reflected across the rest of the jobs market with the report showing the highest rise in permanent job placements for over 12 years and the fastest growth in temporary positions in 34 months.

Kevin Green, chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, said in a statement: "Permanent appointments increasing at the fastest pace for over 12 years is the clearest sign yet of a revival in the UK jobs market.”

He added: “A rise in both temporary and contract work at the sharpest rate for nearly three years shows how they continue to provide vital flexibility for UK businesses as well as a valuable route back into work for job-seekers.”

When it comes to the likes of IT professionals or engineers, Green is confident that this growth will continue.

However, the upcoming cuts set to be brought in by whoever wins the next general election could throw a spanner in the works.

Bernard Brown, partner and head of business services at KPMG, said in a statement: "A lot of the current hiring activity is going on in the public sector.”

“The public sector recession which clearly is on the cards hasn't hit the jobs market yet but when it does, the upwards trend we have seen over the last couple of months may come to a halt."
