Toshiba adds four new faces to Satellite laptop lineup
By Martin James,
Toshiba has announced a quartet of new additions to its Satellite laptop range, aimed at making the laptop a more integral part of the home.
At the high end of the range is the Toshiba Satellite A660, which follows on from the popular A500 by offering a premium specification in a 16in form factor. It can be configured with an Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processor, and ships with a dedicated Nvidia graphics chip.
On-board memory options go up to 8GB, while up to 640GB of storage is available. It's also the first laptop to support Intel's Wireless Display (Wi-Di) technology, which allows video and music to be streamed wirelessly to WiDi-compatible TVs, and comes with DNLA compatibility too.
The A660 features an LED-backlit display, Harman Kardon speakers and there's also the option for a Blu-ray drive.
Toshiba claims the specification makes the A660 ideal for 3D gaming, HD video playback and media creation, though the display resolution on the laptop itself is limited to a non-HD 1366 x 768, so you'll need to connect to a high-definition external display via the on-board HDMI port to take advantage.
On the software front, the Satellite A660 comes with Toshiba's own DNLA-compatible Media Controller and LifeSpace multimedia titles, while the new USB Sleep-and-Music feature allows you to listen to an external MP3 player through the laptop's speakers even while the laptop is asleep.
The other three models are aimed at more mainstream consumers. The Satellite L650 and L670 feature the same base specification but in 15.6in and 17.3in screen sizes respectively. Processor options are a choice between Intel's i3 or i5 chips, or more affordable AMD chips, while memory can be configured up to 4GB and hard drive storage up to 500GB.
Some models feature the option of a ATI Mobility Radeon 5145 graphics chip with 512MB of its own memory.
Finally, the Satellite C650 is a 15.6in model aimed more at the entry level – the base specification is expected to retail for around £350. It can be set up with either an Intel Core i3, Intel Pentium or AMD processor, and like the L650 and L670 can be configured with up to 4GB or RAM and 500GB of built-in storage.
All the new models bar the A660 are to go on sale towards the end of May, with the premium model expected in June, but no specific prices have been released as yet.
