An official Twitter app has been launched on the Android platform today.

Both Twitter and Google worked together on the free app to offer an official option to Android users, instead of using one of a number of third party developed clients out there.

The companies have confirmed the code will be released to open source developers “in the near future,” and that Twitter will be working with Android developers to help them include Twitter APIs in upcoming applications.

The only drawback seems to be its availability, as users will have to be running the Android 2.1 operating system or above to be able to use the app.

Twitter has already released official apps on the BlackBerry and the iPhone but this latest version helps it infiltrate the market even further with the growing popularity of the Android platform.
