Perhaps capitalising on business users' growing appetite for social networking and social media tools, CA Technologies today unveiled a new community based website focused on rating and slating cloud services.

Dubbed Cloud Commons, the new site is intended to be a place where people can go to share their expertise and gain insight into what cloud services are available and what sort of experience their peers have had with said services, according to the company.

"It's a place for like-minded people - IT professionals, chief information officers (CIOs), analysts - anyone in the industry interested in IT services, particularly focused on the cloud," said Dave Hodgson, senior vice president at CA Technologies.

"It will be a community. The point will be to get people connected... [You'll] be able to compare similar but disparate services."

Cloud Commons will serve as an independent portal and the company is encouraging others in the industry to jump on board. "We're not using this as a vehicle for selling CA products," Hodgson promised.

Throughout the pre-launch briefing, Hodgson and his colleagues compared the new service to something like Trip Advisor that would help provide insightful information for users regardless of where in the IT food chain they sit.

A key part of the ranking process will be the creation of industry standards and a service management index (SMI) and CA has partnered with Carnegie Mellon University to help the project evolve further.
