Google unveils Android 2.2
By Jennifer Scott,
Google has unveiled the next version of its Android mobile operating system (OS) during its annual developer conference in San Francisco.
Android 2.2, otherwise known as “Froyo,” will be released to manufacturers and the open source community within the next few weeks, but developers can download the software development kit (SDK) and native development kit (NDK) from the Android developer site now.
A notable new feature in 2.2 is support for Adobe’s Flash in the Android browser, contrary to Apple’s strong stance against incorporating it into the iPhone.
Other improvements include the ability to use a handset as a portable hotspot for network access, integration with Microsoft Exchange and significantly increased speed.
“The growth of the Android ecosystem continues to exceed our expectations,” said Andy Rubin, vice president of engineering at Google, in a statement.
“Every day, 100,000 new people start using Android-based handsets. There are now more than 180,000 active Android developers who have contributed over 50,000 apps to the Android Market.”
“Froyo is another step toward making Android an even better platform for developers, enterprises and consumers.”
The company also demoed a web-based version of the Android Market at the conference, claiming more improvements would be made for customers getting hold of their apps.

Kindle For Android
At last Kindle for Android has been confirmed. It's been a rumor for some time, and being an Android fan, I am pleased to finally hear that Kindle will be accessible on Android. Amazon already offers Kindle for iPhone, but I am just not a large iPhone enthusiast. When I use Kindle I have to use it on my personal computer and sometimes transporting my laptop with me isn't the most suitable situation. However, my phone is almost constantly on me, and it is likely to be such a comfort to be able to continue on my reading wherever I am going.
